P·790 vs. P·770 IRONS

Both P·790 and P·770 irons are built to give golfers two different blends of distance and forgiveness in a clean, modern players inspired package that is synonymous with the P·Series family.

The similarities of P·790 and P·770 start on the inside. Both irons feature FLTD CG™ with the center of gravity (CG) lowest in the long irons and progressively shifting higher throughout the set.

In P·790, a new thick-thin back wall construction unlocks additional weight redistribution, further optimizing mass properties for pinpointed CG placement creating the distance and forgiveness P·790 is known for. P·790 irons are perfect for the type of player that benefits from a mid-to-high launch angle and moderate spin.

While P·770 retains the forgiveness and playability characteristics of P·790, it is made to offer better ball strikers the pure feel, control and consistency they seek in a players iron shape.

FLTD CG in P·770 and a precision milled clubface create high launch with the long irons, and lower launch, high spinning shots in the short irons. P·770 irons’ players forged construction features exacting mass optimization and additional tungsten weighting to make them more forgiving than the previous generation.

The responsive face design of both irons delivers a large, intelligent sweet spot that helps golfers maintain ball speed and distance on shots that are struck off-center.

When it comes to shaping, golfers will notice a slightly more pronounced toe, thicker top line, and wider sole in P·790 compared to P·770. What’s new to P·770 is refined shaping to improve turf interaction and a thinner topline than previous generations balanced with a compact shape.

For golfers in search of increased distance and maximum forgiveness, P·790 irons are a great choice. For those looking for a modern players iron shape that provides consistency without sacrificing any performance benefits, P·770 irons are sure to deliver.

P·770 vs. P·7CB IRONS

Comparing the performance characteristics between P·770 and P·7CB starts with examining their shaping differences and launch/spin characteristics.

P·7CB was designed with the discerning ball striker in mind. It’s Compact Grain Forging process undergoes 2,000 pounds of pressure to deliver the softest 1025 carbon steel for the purest feel possible. This is the player that’s looking to flight short irons, shape shots in both directions, and have consistent control. Flight dynamics for this type of player are low launch and high to mid spin.

Being a modern players iron, P·770 shares many of the same performance characteristics found in P·7CB. In addition to the precision and control characteristics that both irons share, P·770 additionally boasts an extra level of forgiveness and playability. Long irons in P·770 will launch higher than P·7CB with short irons in both clubs being made for shot making and playability.

The head shapes of P·7CB and P·770 take on different looks. P·7CB features a more compact head shape with a thinner top line when compared to P·770, while P·770 has slightly more offset and a longer blade length in the long irons.

From a sole perspective, P·7CB irons’ sole camber and progressive bounce foster reliable and consistent turf interaction.   A newly modified leading-edge design helps P·770 deliver consistent shot making and crisp turf interaction.

The face and grooves of P·770 and P·7CB are both precision milled. As a result, they deliver the launch and spin better players demand for consistent control.

P·7CB also has a constant CG from the top of the bag to the bottom creating lower CG resulting in a playable iron with enhanced trajectory without too much spin. Adding to the consistency equation are perimeter weighting and co-forged tungsten that offer the ideal blend of stability and workability.

Compared to P·7CB, P·770 provides additional forgiveness properties, while P·7CB is the perfect iron for advanced players that prioritize predictable shot patterns and precise control.

Those same properties in P·7CB were crucial for Rory McIlroy when he won both the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo Championship with a P·7CB 4-iron in the bag. Tiger Woods, however, has opted for the forgiveness benefits of P·770 in his long irons, gaming a P·770 3-iron.

P·7TW IRONS

Through an in-depth testing process that featured nine different prototype iterations, Tiger Woods played a pivotal role in designing P·7TW irons. As a player whose DNA is built upon what he feels in his hands, Tiger prioritized ultimate control and consistency over gaining additional yardage.

“I have my numbers. I don’t want to get any surprises and hit the ball any further than I’m hitting it, especially in competition. We tried to get the head shape exactly right, use the right metal, have CG in the perfect spot, and that accumulated to where I had a product in my hand that I knew I could hit.”
Tiger Woods

Each iron has been meticulously shaped to meet Tiger's discerning eye. The top line in P·7TW is the thinnest of any iron in the P·Series family, while the blade length is also noticeably wider and features progressive face height.

P·7TW irons are made of soft 1025 carbon steel that undergoes 2,000 tons of pressure during the forging process.  Also seen in P·770 and P·7CB, the faces and grooves of P·7TW irons are machine milled to deliver precise control.  Tiger’s irons additionally have milled grind soles that ensure geometric shape and a precise leading edge for more predictable turf interaction.

The lofts of P·7TW irons are one to two degrees weaker and lie angles are slightly more upright to create mid-low launch and mid-spin characteristics for advanced workability.

It’s safe to say the hard work of this meticulous testing and design process paid off, as shortly after it was complete Tiger won the 2019 Masters Tournament with P·7TW irons.
